I had the privilege of directing the music video for the track Eel City by Sydney artist, Phondupe. The brief was to create a focal point of simple 2D loops that animated to the music, with a colour palette based on the already existing single artwork. I wanted to avoid creating flat 2D loops that were purely contained in the central screen space, so my approach was to explore the screen space as much as possible by having dynamic elements animate in and out of frame, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere. This was also achieved by animating loops that move through different axes in space.

”Some time ago I read about the discovery of an eel colony in the uninhabitable depths of an underwater volcano. Somehow these creatures had not only survived, but found a way to prosper, by living off the heat that came up through the cracks in the earth's core. I thought it was a pretty beautiful allegory for survival in the face of adversity - finding a way to make it through, despite everything life throws at you.” - Phondupe
